Sonoran Desert Landscapes
The Iconic Saguaro is found only in the Sonoran Desert, which includes about 120,000 square miles of southern California and Arizona, most of Baja California, and half of Sonora, Mexico.
Discover the Cacti of Sedona
I often daydream and after meditation, I envision contemporary Sedona landscapes. I aim to create vivid, mystical paintings of the prickly pear and Saguaro cactus that thrive in this high desert region.
Iconic Saguaro
In this photo, you can see the iconic Saguaros using their unique method of growing arms to stay upright. The picture depicts numerous “babies” emerging from the cactus to help it stand tall and straight after losing one of its massive arms. This stunning landscape, located in the Village of Oak Creek in Sedona, served as my inspiration for painting a breathtaking Sedona landscape artwork with fluid, sensual movement and much to absorb.
The Grand One
If you’re interested in the natural world, you might find it fascinating that the Saguaro cactus can live for up to 150-175 years, with some biologists suggesting it can even surpass 200 years. These majestic plants can grow up to 50 feet and weigh over 6 tons, with the biggest Saguaro on record being about 46 feet tall, featuring a dozen arms, and estimated to be around 200 years old. Sadly, this incredible specimen, known as “the Grand One,” was damaged in a wildfire in 2005 and eventually fell down a few years later.
Desert Blossom – Arizona State Wildflower
Saguaros sport a temporary crown of blossoms in late spring and early summer. The desert blooms open at night and live through the following afternoon—a short window for pollinators like bees and bats to reach the pollen within. After the blooms close, they mature into healthy red fruit—a sweet dessert delicacy and a vital nutrient source for desert tribes like the Tohono O’odham.
Tons of Water
A saguaro can hold about a ton of water. So in a year, the Saguaro can suck up and transpire a little over a thousand gallons of water and absorb around two hundred gallons in a week.
