As I listened to the Eagles‘ Tequila Sunrise with its memorable line “It’s another tequila sunrise stirrin’ slowly across the sky,” I felt inspired to create my own version of the sunrise using my signature color-flowing technique.

The stunning Saguaro Cactus stands out against the backdrop of Arizona’s frequent and breathtaking desert sunrises and sunsets. As the heart of the Arizona Sonoran desert, I painted three hearts into this mystical landscape. Can you spot them?

The reference to tequila sunrise originates from Tucson, Arizona, where the Saguaro National Park is located. These majestic Saguaros can only be found in the Sonoran Desert.

Saguaro National Park

The Sonoran Desert experiences winter and summer rains, and the Saguaro obtains most of its moisture during the summer rainy season.

Habitat

The most critical factors for growth are water and temperature. If the elevation is too high, the cold weather and frost can kill the Saguaro.

Life Span

Saguaros can live as much as 150-200 years old with the right growing conditions.

Slow-growing cacti

Saguaros are very slow-growing cacti. For example, a 10-year-old plant might only be 1.5 inches tall. However, Saguaro can grow between 40-60 feet tall (12-18m). When rain is plentiful and the Saguaro is fully hydrated, it can weigh between 3200-4800 pounds.
